Jay Sharp

Jay is originally from Sydney Australia, where he grew up on a healthy dose of quality music of genres from rock to reggae and every thing in between. He has been DJ’n since 2000 and has played and promoted many nights in both Sydney and Dublin over the years

Jay has been living in Dublin since 2000, and during this time has dedicated himself to breaking into the Dublin dance-music scene by distributing his mix CDs to various venues & promoters and by volunteering his DJ skills as often as possible. Jay had a weekly breaks show on radio NOVA 94.6FM Tuesday night 11pm -1am, that was running from February 2004 until Nova was shut down in September 2005. The show, Tuesday Break Sessions, was dedicated to both funk/hip hop and break beat. Through the show Jay consistently tried to push breaks in Dublin, by featuring guest mixes from local DJs and showcasing tracks from local producers. Over the year and half, the show built up a solid following of regular listeners.

Jay also features as one half of the 'Soul Fusion' duo with accomplished sax player Anton Peteitchits, playing a mix up of funk, jazz, hip hop, reggae and soul. Throughout 2004 'Soul Fusion' held a residency at Pravda, one of Dublin’s leading lounge bars

Jay has played alongside Simon F and the FOOD DJs, 12ten DJs and most recently he supported The Freestylers + MC Real in the Temple Bar Music Centre. This mix brought together a quality selection of hip-hop grooves and phat funk-driven breaks. It showcased some of the latest breaks offerings alongside some of the finest tracks from the past, with a few Jay Sharp special edits that truly stamp his signature on this original lively mix.

Quotes

I have a broad taste in music and I think my DJ style reflects this, as I like to mix it up between various styles from funk / disco house, breaks and electro, to hip hop and reggae. I love Funky Bass lines and tasty percussive drum beats. I don’t like to pigeon-hole myself to any one style, I like to always keep an open mind when it comes to music.

My favourite Label is most definitely Finger Lickin Records, some of my favourite DJ / Producers would have to be Dub Pistols, Plump DJs and Finger Lickin crew, Rennie Pilgrim, Layo & Bushwacka, Stanton Worriers, Freestylers, Chicken Lips, Groove Armada, 2 Many DJs and not to forget the man himself Danny Tenaglia, whose DJ sets, mixes and general passion for music inspired me with my DJ’n. I once read an interview with DT where he was asked how he managed to do his 18hr sets at MWMC and he just replied “From the heart”. This statement stuck in my mind as it was simple yet so true.
